Now the idyllic castle park is not only reserved for walkers and restaurant visitors, culture lovers also get the magical ambience of the art location back on an inspiring tour of one of the museums. For the official opening in the museum barn, there was – depending on Corona – distance and mouth protection instead of sparkling wine and croissants, but instead exciting information from the exhibition organizers and intensive exchange of ideas on an emotional topic. Museum chief Josefine Glöckner was able to welcome District President Erwin Dotzel, who had brought Anne Kraft, Head of the Department for Museum of the District. Prof. Dr. Kaus Reder, district home nurse, and Daniela Kühnel, art historian M.A., who designed the exhibition, completed the panel of experts.
At home and strange
The subtitle of the exhibition “From Arriving and Leaving” describes an ancient topic of humanity and, above all since the migration wave of 2015, has not only brought the round tables and parliaments “up to speed” with us, as the district president Erwin Dotzel describes in his greeting . Exhibition maker Daniela Kühnel from Kitzingen expresses the concept with a circle of chairs. Six chairs in white, placed exactly in the round. In addition, a little bit apart and somehow annoying an identical, but blue chair. “What does he want…”? and “Where do they come from …”? the billboard behind is overwritten, which alludes to human feelings, to “homely” and “strange”. These questions accompany the visitor through the entire exhibition, are viewed from different perspectives and specified in Lower Franconia.
Refugees of faith and world explorers
Conflicts of belief are dealt with under “In Kilian’s Footsteps”, the economic hardships of the 19th century with the wave of emigration from Spessart and Rhön to America are conveyed under “Brave New World”. The search for work, freedom or security, out of economic need, but also in the service of faith, as Daniela Kühnel writes in the well-made accompanying brochure, particularly characterizes Lower Franconia as a border region. At the same time and on an equal footing, the gain in cultural influences and inspiring exchange is also shown.
Albrecht Dürer, Balthasar Neumann, Giovanni Tiepolo are the subjects of “artist trips and cultural exchange”. The pitcher bakers from the Rhön region benefit from the export of the healing water from Kissingen and Brueckenau, as shown in a photo with a hand-made jug and branded Rakoczy lettering. Under “forcedly”, it is also not kept secret how the Nazi regime forces the Franconian Jews to emigrate. The original escape backpack from Hella Strauß from Würzburg not only makes the fate of this 17-year-old Jewish girl in 1941 clear.
Border walks
“The girl in the photo”, on the other hand, shows the arrival of displaced persons from the eastern German regions. The expressive picture from 1946 gets under your skin.
“Living in two cultures”, on the other hand, describes the situation of Turkish migrant workers, and Conny Froboess draws attention to Italian guest workers with her hit “Two Little Italians …”. The depressing situation on the inner German border in the Rhön-Grabfeld district, which is still stuck in memory, is impressively described under “border hikes”. Arriving and leaving was no longer possible.
Civil wars, crumbling states and difficult conditions in the Middle and Middle East or Africa caused almost 70 million people worldwide to flee in 2018. Migration counseling in Lower Franconia counts 48 nations. “Escape to Europe” shows difficulties, but also successful examples of lived integration, but also describes the anchor facility in Geldersheim / Niederwerrn.
At the end of the tour, the chairs from the entrance invite you back. But now they are colored, the blue one is no longer noticeable, but there is a takeaway menu on the laid table. The visitor can choose: kebabs from Turkey, bigos from Poland, Mamaliga from Romania or blue corners from Franconia.
The museum barn with the exhibition and the folklore and school museum are open from Tuesday to Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. and on Sundays and public holidays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday is closed.
