The column of smoke that rose Sunday evening in the clear sky of Yverdon-les-Bains did not go unnoticed. Many onlookers went to the city gates, not far from the carousel, to see a small isolated house, fortunately unoccupied, disappear in the flames. Dispatched to the Polish Way, the firefighters could not do much other than protect the surroundings.
“An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of this fire, notes Florence Frei, spokesman for the cantonal police. A canine brigade went on the scene to find possible traces of accelerating products, but nothing was discovered, either inside or near the building. ” On social networks, comments are rife. Some recall that a few years ago a small building located right next to it was also engulfed in flames. It was an old sheepfold, illegally occupied for several months at the beginning of the 2000s. Others did not hesitate to attribute this fire to squatters or to a group who came to grill on the sly, because more numerous than the health crisis allows. A Yverdonnois has his own little idea on the question: “It is the fact of a small group of teenagers from the Moulins district who also” have fun “setting fire to the trash cans in the corner … Besides, you have seen? On some videos that shoot on the Net, we see another fire, just on the other side of the concrete path. ” On Facebook, a person even goes so far as to mention an insurance scam, “justifying” the gesture by the current economically difficult period.
Does she know that this small house located in an agricultural area has long been owned by the City of Yverdon? “It was built in 1930. And it has not been occupied since the death of its last tenant in September 2017,” said Thomas Czaka, head of the Buildings Service. Since then, her access had been blocked because she was the subject of wild visits from time to time. “And as the owner, it is the City that is responsible for what happens there,” he continues. “We have also filed a complaint,” notes syndic Jean-Daniel Carrard in conclusion.
