New York City Schools decided to ban ChatGPT in their establishments. The reason is that this would allow the student to cheat and facilitate his homework and he could no longer exercise his critical thinking and reasoning. Am I the only one to burst out laughing slyly at such a stupid reason?
The other reason is that ChatGPT may provide false and offensive information. It’s sure that pulling out the anti-racism argument is a hell of a magic mirror that we can use against all those who are foreign to us. But this ban shows that the school, like many sectors, does not understand technology and that this ban will simply encourage students to use it more.
Then, it’s been decades since school no longer teaches reasoning and critical thinking. The result is that we have millions of mindless people who no longer know how to read, write or count who come to flood the infinite sea of luxury unemployed. Of our timethe school learns to pass its exams, that’s all. We will constantly push the student to pass his exams and if necessary, we can even give him the questions in advance.
And when he does not succeed with this divine help, we will ask the teachers to cheat on the marks. 20 years ago it was unthinkable to use a calculator in class, today you can use it during exams. And in 20 years, artificial intelligence will be fully allowed in classrooms.
Next, on the offensive aspect, ChatGPT does not invent content…yet. It just generates answers from data it finds on the web. So it’s the society that’s offending, not the AI. It is only a tool and at no time was it said to be perfect.
On pointed subjects, it completely misses the point, but I have fun like crazy to use it to create stories. I am a web editor and webmaster and it is obvious that ChatGPT and the other AIs that will follow it, will eviscerate these two professions in the next 2 or 3 years. But it does not matter, we will adapt. It is certain that many low-end trades will disappear.
More ChatGPT does not work miracles and some of his texts remain very mechanical. It’s up to us to use it to do the bulk of the work and then we arrive to refine it behind. During the Industrial Revolution, the Ludites were the workers in the windmills who destroyed the mechanical grinders because “it stole their work”. We realize that a century has passed and that the Ludites are still there.
Also regarding this ban in New York schools, it only concerns the class. Students are free to use it at home or otherwise. Most importantly, cheaters have been around since the dawn of mankind. If you forbid him this tool, then he will find something else. And some people will never use ChatGPT because they don’t need it.
