The European Union’s Internal Market Commissioner, Thierry Breton, has called on Twitter owner Elon Musk to take action against the lies and hate on the platform. If rule violations continue, the EU could, at most, “shut down the platform in Europe,” Breton told media group Funke newspapers. If necessary, the EU will do the same. Referring to the Twitter icon, Breton then said “that the bird will fly according to European rules”. Breton said he will meet Elon Musk before Christmas. If Twitter doesn’t do enough against lies and hate, there is a risk of fines, and if the rules are broken, they will be shut down. Musk had always stressed that what he saw as excessive restrictions on freedom of expression on the platform should be lifted. Critics fear it may encourage hate speech and hate speech.
