The EU pushes for the establishment of a special court to punish Russian war crimes

A move to legally hold Russia accountable for the invasion of Ukraine is taking shape.

The EU has agreed to set up a special tribunal to convict Russia’s war crimes and promote the use of Russia’s frozen assets for war recovery costs.

The European Union (EU) has proposed setting up a special court supported by the United Nations.

Investigate and prosecute Russian war crimes.

This is because the International Criminal Court (ICC) has no jurisdiction over Russia or Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Zelensky said special courts need to be meticulously prepared for them to work properly and he looked forward to Britain’s role.

A plan to hold Russia accountable for war reparations is also taking shape.

Ukraine’s financial loss is estimated at 600 billion euros, or about 818 trillion won.

The EU is trying to use assets seized by Russia to pay for recovery.

The EU has frozen €300 billion in the assets of the Central Bank of Russia and €19 billion in the assets of emerging Russian conglomerates.

Earlier, the G7, the seven major countries, agreed to form a network for Russia’s war crimes investigation and evidence preservation after the first justice minister meeting in Berlin, Germany.

International pressure is growing on Russia, which has returned half of the occupied territories, including Kherson, following a counterattack by Ukrainian forces.
