On a warm and sunny summer evening, the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Guntas Kuzmas, performed the first symphony concert in the renovated Liepāja Concert Garden “Pūt, vējiņi!” with the applause of the audience.

In the first part of the concert, the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra performed the overture from Leonard Bernstein’s operetta “Candide” and, together with pianist Vestard Šimka, the piano concerto created by the American composer George Gershwin in 1925, which is a particularly bright and energetic combination of jazz and academic music.

In the second part, the visitors of the concert and the vacationers gathered in Jūrmala Park were delighted by the music of the famous Hollywood composer John Williams, written for Steven Spielberg’s famous film “Catch me if you can”. Oskars Petrauskis (saxophone), Marta Kauliņa-Pelnēna (percussion instruments) and Guntis Kolerts (double bass) played the soloist parts in this work.

Spanish moods were evoked by the famous Mexican composer Arturo Marquez’s “Danson No. 2” and the world-famous and audience-loved “Bolero” by Maurice Ravel.

On Friday, August 12, the musicians of the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra will go on a trip to Southern Kurzeme, where they will delight the audience at the “Rimbenieks” festival, while at the concert garden “Pūt, vējini!” will return on August 27, when the legendary Latvian rock group “Pērkons” will thunder with symphonic power for the first time.
