Storms Return to NY with a Pleasant Weekend in Sight – NBC New York (47)

What you should know

  • Another batch of storms returns to the New York area this Friday.
  • We are expected to have balmy temperatures in the 80s.
  • Next week the good is over, as we could count on another heat wave.

NEW YORK – If you didn’t get a chance to enjoy the beautiful days we had earlier this week, you’ll have another chance this weekend.

First, however, we will have to endure a second day of heat and humidity along with the threat of isolated thunderstorms in the tri-state area.

Check herein the latest severe weather alerts in your neighborhood.

Like Thursday, Friday is set to feature higher humidity than we saw earlier in the week. There could be some scattered showers in the morning, but most of the day will be sweltering and cloudy, with temperatures in the 80s and 90s.

An approaching cold front to the west will bring another chance of showers and a few thunderstorms. Any stormy weather that does appear will mostly come after 5pm, although the storm threat doesn’t appear to be too intense. There is likely to be some steady showers with a rumble away from thunder for a brief time just after the city’s evening rush hour.

Most of the severe weather is expected to remain farther south toward Baltimore and DC, although portions of southern New Jersey could experience severe weather overnight. Stay informed with The Authority in El Tiempo to learn the latest about possible changes and changes in the forecast.

Once the storms die down, the weather improves tremendously, with a great weekend forecast in the 80s and partly sunny skies. The lower humidity also stays in place for a few days. It will provide some welcome relief for New York City after two record-setting heat waves this month, the second lasting a full week.

And we could have another one on the way in early August. The end of next week tends to be warmer, which could bring another stretch of 90+ degree days and possibly the third heat wave of this summer. Fortunately (and mercifully), it doesn’t look like it’s going to last as long as the previous heat wave.

EXTREME HEAT SATURES ELECTRICITY NETWORKS

In order to monitor any potential disruption to power grids, which are already under a lot of stress from the heat wave, Con-Ed opened its emergency response center to meet the increase in demand. The utility is asking New Yorkers to save energy by turning off air conditioning in unoccupied rooms and to use dishwashers or laundry facilities early in the morning or late at night, rather than during peak hours.

“If people lose power, we can respond to those outages and restore power as quickly and safely as possible,” a Con Edison spokesperson said.
