Kilometers long Polish fence on the border with Belarus ready | Abroad

The border between Poland and Belarus is 418 kilometers long, but mostly runs through rivers and lakes. The land border is now shielded with the fence.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki visited the border crossing at Kuznica due to the completion of the fence. He called Belarus’ choice to bring migrants from the Middle East and send them to EU countries as the beginning of the current crisis in Ukraine. “This was the first attack. It tested the EU’s outer border at the request of Russian President Putin.”

Last year, many migrants from the Middle East went via Belarus to countries in the European Union such as Poland. This resulted in a large influx of migrants. The EU countries did not want to offer these people asylum, many of the migrants were sheltered in tent camps near the border, under often harsh conditions.

Journalists and human rights activists are no longer allowed to come within 3 kilometers of the border since last year. That ban will be lifted on Friday, because the fence is finished.
