In his new music video, the Viennese jeweler Philipp Thurzo shows what a passion for watches and a love of music have in common.
“Love your work, then you never have to work in your life again”: The origin of this much-quoted saying is still unclear. However, it applies to few as well as to Philipp Thurzo. His love for watches went so far that he decided to write a song about it.
It all started in 2018. For his wedding, the Viennese jeweler wanted to present a song he had sung himself and therefore decided to take singing lessons. “I wanted to avoid the guests bleeding from their ears,” he laughs in conversation “Today”. Just at that time he had a songwriting workshop. “My singing teacher always told me to write about what I love,” he says. This is how Thurzo’s first song came about, a declaration of love to his wife. But in addition to the people with whom he shares his life, there is another great love in Philipp Thurzo’s life: watches!
The next project: A song about Mariahilfer Straße
When the 34-year-old talks about his watches, the joy just oozes out of him. “People always think they don’t need a watch because they have one on their phone. But these are such wonderful accessories, they come in all colors and shapes. I can choose them to match my outfit and always coordinate them,” he enthuses. Reason enough to finally write a song about his favorite accessory. “In the beginning I only wrote a few lines, but I liked them so much that I decided to do it professionally”.
The Viennese hired a music arranger and composer and went to the recording studio. The result is a music video for the song “I love watches”. “I wrote the script for the song myself and produced the video with the help of friends, actors, musicians and models,” says Thurzo, admitting, “I’m aware that it’s not a pop star song or a Hollywood flick. I am but very proud of it, because I’m a full-time jeweler and I did it all myself without any experience. In my opinion, it turned out well”. The hobby singer still has a message: “There are many people out there who love watches like I do and I want to show them that their inclination to many timepieces is good, beautiful and normal.”
Philipp Thurzo has been selling watches and jewelry in the family business on Mariahilferstraße for 50 years. In September 2021, he received the jewelry stars audience award with the title “Trend Jeweler of the Year.” His next goal: to write a song about Mariahilferstrasse.
