The reason? The former basketball player is not vaccinated. But he has to go on a business trip soon, and he counts on a recovery certificate to get a valid CST. Loridon could not be reached for comment, but announced on Twitter on Saturday: “Question. Boost your natural immunity by infecting yourself. Is that an option?”

A day later he announced that he had done this: “Yes, I deliberately allowed myself to be infected.” He posted a video online showing him putting saliva from an infected person in his nose.

“Deliberately looking for an infection is a bad idea,” experts said earlier. The illness after infection with the omikron variant is generally less serious, but the risk of ending up in hospital is not zero. A 51-year-old singer from the Czech Republic who deliberately allowed herself to be infected, died of the infection. You can also still get lung COVID, and you may be putting the elderly and vulnerable people at risk. Moreover, no one wants to put pressure on healthcare.

“Incredible disrespect”Flemish Minister of Health Wouter Beke (CD&V) calls Loridon’s action disrespectful. “Our excellent healthcare will also take care of you if you end up in hospital,” the minister writes. “It shows an incredible lack of respect for the many caregivers who have been giving their best in extremely difficult circumstances for two years now.”
