Biden must reintroduce Trump’s immigration policy

Donald Trump introduced the so-called “remain in Mexico” policy when he was president. As a result, tens of thousands of asylum seekers, mostly from Central America, were detained in Mexico while awaiting processing.

Joe Biden promised a more humane immigration policy when he took over, and quickly took action to abolish the program. Since then, the case has gone to court in the United States, and finally the Biden administration asked the Supreme Court to postpone a reintroduction of the program.

However, the Supreme Court said in August that the program should continue, and the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on Thursday that the law will enter into force again on December 6, ie next Monday, on the court’s order.

The Mexican government states that it will not return Central American asylum seekers awaiting asylum in the United States.

– Mexico has decided, for humanitarian and temporary reasons, that the country will not send back migrants who have an agreement with US immigration judges to apply for asylum, it is stated in a statement from the country’s foreign ministry.

Although the United States is now reintroducing the program, which has been officially abbreviated to MPP, the White House is criticizing it.

– The president still believes that MPP has several shortcomings, leads to unjustifiable human strain and draws resources and personnel away from other priority issues. That is why we ended the program, says Biden’s spokeswoman Jen Psaki.
