Nördlingen (dpa) – The city of Nördlingen is setting a monument to the former world-class striker Gerd Müller.
On the first anniversary of the football legend’s death on August 15, 2022, a life-size bronze statue of the footballer is to be erected at the Nördlinger Stänglesbrunnen, said Mayor David Wittner (Free Voters). Several media had already reported on the plan for Müller’s hometown.
The statue is supposed to represent the former world-class goalscorer, who has been praised as the “bomber of the nation”, at what is probably the most important goal of his career, the winning goal to make it 2-1 against the Netherlands at the 1974 World Cup final in Munich’s Olympic Stadium. At the Stänglesbrunnen between the house where he was born and the house on Berger Strasse where he grew up, Müller is said to have learned to play football.
According to the city hall chief, the city council has already decided on an offer from the Rincker bell and art foundry near Frankfurt am Main. The commissioned artist is the sculptor Herbert Deiss from Aschaffenburg.
Müller died last August at the age of 75. The former national player came to FC Bayern in the summer of 1964 and shaped an era. With the national team he became European champion in 1972 and world champion in 1974. After his career, the former top scorer stayed with FC Bayern Munich as a youth coach for a long time.
