“It is difficult to understand this tragedy given the vitality and passion with which Mayor Matongo treated me and the people of Soweto so shortly before his death,” Ramaphosa said in a statement. “Nothing could prepare us for this sudden loss, which has robbed our country’s economic center of its second executive mayor in two months.”
Matongo was elected mayor of South Africa’s economic center last month, following the death of Geoff Makhubo, who succumbed to complications from Covid-19 in July.
