Tropical Storm “Kevin” Causes Heavy Rain in Baja California Sur

La Paz.- The tormenta tropical “Kevin”, although far from the national territory, has left copious rainfall in Baja California Sur, especially in the Los Cabos municipality, where stream runs and effects on some roads are reported.

Municipal and state Civil Protection authorities reported that the cloudfalls have caused intermittent rains and are forecast to continue this Wednesday, so they asked the population to travel with caution and heed the indications.

Although the storm, more than 700 kilometers west-southwest of the Baja California peninsula continues to weaken, it is estimated that it has left about 120 millimeters of rain in the municipality of Los Cabos.

Interviewed by EL UNIVERSAL, the head of Civil Protection of that region, Erick Santillán Castillo, said that rains have been occurring since the weekend, although they intensified during the afternoon and night of Tuesday, so it was even necessary as a preventive measure the opening of 12 temporary shelters.

He stated that the foregoing since some families expressed their fear of being in risk areas; however, only six people took refuge in San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.

During this Wednesday, he said, shelters are closing and families are returning to their homes. Although the rain forecast continues, it is expected to be intermittent and moderate.

However – he added – authorities are now continuing to monitor tropical storm “Linda” which is strengthening and is located south of the states of Jalisco and Colima and could also cause rainfall for this region.

The official added that the cloudiness of “Kevin” registered in the last hours added to an area of ​​low pressure and this caused the rainfall.

The streets of the port of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, above all, were the ones that were most affected by the running of streams, which are being attended this noon by the Public Services Directorate, removing debris and silt.

“So far we have not registered major damages, only the complications in the roads as a result of the heavy rains. In the north, the streams were running dynamically, especially in Miraflores, Santiago and La Ribera ”, he explained.

For his part, Carlos Godínez León, head of State Civil Protection, said that the rains caused streams to rise that even reached the tourist area, and given the rain forecast for the following days, he asked the population to stay alert.
