Corona in Germany: vaccination prioritization canceled – warning of frustration and disillusionment

The vaccination prioritization in Germany has been lifted from today. All people aged 16 and over can now be vaccinated against Corona, but experts are dampening the high expectations.

Berlin – The prioritization in Germany has been lifted. From Monday (June 7th, 2021), all people aged 16 and over in Germany who want to be vaccinated can be vaccinated against the coronavirus – regardless of the priority list that previously applied. However, there is currently not enough vaccine available, which is why it should take over the summer until everyone receives a corresponding vaccination offer.

For this reason, some doctors and Health Minister Jens Spahn from the CDU have already warned to be patient. At the same time, more than 6000 company doctors are getting started with corona vaccinations. In return, they will receive a total of 702,000 of around 6.6 million announced doses in the first week – a lot of the vaccine is currently still being used for the second vaccinations.

Corona: Frustration and disillusionment despite the discontinuation of vaccination prioritization

When the prioritization is removed, people’s expectations increase – but it will not be possible to meet them in all cases. Rather, experts predict that those who want to be vaccinated will first have to adjust to frustration and disillusionment. The managing director of the German Association of Towns and Municipalities, Gerd Landsberg, told the Rheinische Post: “Disappointment and frustration are inevitable because there is not enough corona vaccine available immediately.” In 2021 – possibly even until the end of June – for example in North Rhine-Westphalia there will be no dates for first vaccinations in the vaccination centers. “

German family doctors also dampened expectations of the end of the corona vaccination prioritization: “Ultimately, the vaccine is still too scarce for the high demand and is still being delivered too unreliably,” Ulrich Weigeldt, chairman of the German Association of General Practitioners, told newspapers Funke media group. At the same time, with the lifting of the prioritization and the announcement of child and youth vaccinations, demand will increase – “but the setting will remain the same: We vaccinate as much as we can.”

Corona in Germany: Vaccination after prioritization remains in some vaccination centers

People at high risks are not vaccinated everywhere. In Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg and Bavaria, the prioritization according to risk groups in vaccination centers should therefore be retained for the time being. In Bremen, too, the centers are initially working through the priority lists – Saarland also wants to give priority to people in the previous prioritization groups at appointments for a vaccination against the coronavirus. In the other countries, however, the prioritization also ends in the corona vaccination centers. In the medical practices, however, the prioritization does not apply nationwide.

Children from the age of 12 are now also among those people who can get a vaccination appointment from the doctor from Monday – Europe’s drug agency EMA approved the corona vaccine from Biontech / Pfizer for use in children at the end of May. The Standing Vaccination Commission has already announced, however, that due to a lack of data and examinations, there will be no general vaccination recommendation for children from the age of 12 for the time being.

So if you want to be vaccinated against the coronavirus as soon as possible after the prioritization has been lifted, you can do this either with your family doctor or at a vaccination center. According to official information from the Federal Ministry of Health, an appointment can be made immediately – however, it should be noted that the prioritization is not omitted in vaccination centers in every federal state and that in many cases there is not enough vaccine available for prompt treatment.
