Not a demonstrator but shot, this Myanmar girl is dying

YANGON – A 16 year old girl at Myanmar was struggling to live in a military hospital on Wednesday. She was not a demonstrator, but a student who was going to the market and was shot by the security forces junta from a distance.

Her parents frantically took her from one hospital to another to save her.

The teenage girl was hit in the head while trapped in an area near the scene of clashes between demonstrators and junta troops.

Myanmar has been a country in chaos since the military junta toppled civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi in a February 1 coup. The coup sparked a mass uprising that has brought hundreds of thousands of people to the streets demanding a return to democracy.

But as the authorities increasingly turn to lethal means to quell dissent, more and more civilians and bystanders are dying of gunshot wounds.

The innocent 16-year-old student became the latest victim. He is known by the pseudonym Ngwe Oo from Wundwin, a remote town in the central Mandalay region.

He was on his way to the market when a rubber bullet hit him yesterday.
