“Transparency is in vogue,” said SP councilor Roland Kappeler, referring to the city of Bern, where the population accepted a proposal to disclose party finances with 88 percent. Similar approaches are in the pipeline at national and cantonal level. Winterthur is now jumping on the bandwagon: on Monday, a center-left alliance referred a motion to the city council.
Not only will political parties have to disclose their finances every year in the future, but also – shortly before the ballot box – all persons and organizations that campaign for elections or votes. Anyone donating more than CHF 5,000 will be identified by name. Only small donations of up to 100 francs are allowed completely anonymously. Several donations from the same person are added together.
