Honda: stop to petrol and diesel cars in Europe from 2022

Honda aims to offer one range of electrified vehicles only (hybrid and electric) in Europe by the end of 2022. This means that by that date it will remove the models equipped with petrol and diesel engines from the price lists. The news comes from Autocar who has got to speak with Ian Howells, Senior Vice President of Honda Motor Europe. But this is only the beginning because in the long run the Japanese manufacturer will obviously focus on BEV models.

For Honda, hybrid is still the best transition technology towards pure electric. Indeed, the cost of electric vehicles it is one of the reasons why the Japanese executive does not see them as an immediate solution.

Electric cars cost 33 to 50% more than cars with traditional or hybrid engines.

This important decision was not pushed, however, from recent statements by the UK Government which aims to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars from 2030. As the Honda executive always points out, the program had already been established for some time. Therefore, by the end of 2022 Honda in Europe will no longer sell diesel and petrol cars but only electric and hybrid cars.

And just in 2022 it could debut on the European market a second Honda BEV model. All that remains, therefore, is to wait for further news on the plans of the Japanese company.
