At a cabinet meeting held the day after the North Korean drone invasion, President Yoon Seok-yeol issued an “open warning” to the military.

A day after President Yoon told the cabinet meeting that there had been no reshuffle at the beginning of the year, a “major incident” erupted, sparking the possibility of guilty military personnel and even the theory of the staff renewal.
The president’s office has put forward a “principle theory” that President Yoon would make a full judgment when the results of the military investigation are released, but there is a dilemma that he has no choice but to be cautious.
First of all, there is the perception that the tightening of the military leadership and the creation of a “command vacuum” is what North Korea wants most.
There is not only the risk of being used negatively for further provocation, but also the burden of taking responsibility for future threats or incidents.
Secondly, due to the nature of the military organization, where innovation such as sabotage is difficult due to promotion by rank, there are limited successors and there is a fear that the leadership of the political situation may be taken away during the hearing.
The current mood in the presidential office is that the priority is to correct the paternalism and lax discipline of the military organization rather than a political engineering change that changes the insignia right away.
Finally, President Yoon’s style that there is no “staff to change the situation” and that the responsible person should be questioned harshly also plays a role.
If a one-point reshuffle of military leadership personnel is made, fairness concerns with Minister Lee Sang-min of the Ministry of Public Administration and Security related to the Itaewon disaster cannot be ruled out.
The president’s office had previously characterized the North Korean drone incident as “soft terrorism by political and social disruption.”
He shows a sense of vigilance not to get caught up in provocations aimed at provoking South-South conflicts since the beginning of the second year in power.
