47 human rights organizations at home and abroad sent open letters to President Moon Jae-in, expressing concern about the South Korean government’s passive attitude toward North Korean human rights issues and urged him to take a leading role.
In a letter released by ICNK on the 15th, 47 human rights organizations from 16 countries expressed regret for not participating in the North Korean human rights resolution as a co-sponsor for the past two years. He appealed for the Korean government to take the initiative to promote human rights in Korea.
In their letter, human rights groups were concerned that “if it is for political negotiations that South Korea abandon its leading role in the efforts to promote human rights in North Korea, it conveys the message to North Korea that human rights issues may be ignored.”
He also pointed out that North Korea has committed excessive and unnecessary human rights violations as a reason to combat Corona 19, which has further deteriorated the South Korean government’s reluctance to treat the North Korean human rights situation as a priority.
Human rights groups have requested that the North Korean government clarify what measures the South Korean government is taking to pressure the international community to substantially improve the human rights situation.
