[사회]Tofu for 5 days and ham for another 19 days… From this year the expiration date is displayed

Expiration date labeling system application… expiration date
Milk, expiration date up to 2031… 1 year orientation period
There are many products with only the date displayed on the front of the product.

Starting today, the expiration date displayed on foods will be changed to the expiration date.

Both labels are permitted for one year, so consumers should check carefully before consuming.

This was reported by journalist Shin Yoon-jung.

Consumers who carefully check the expiration date when choosing foods and buy products with as many expiration dates as possible.

Food that’s past its expiration date doesn’t spoil right away, but that’s because we’re reluctant to eat it.

[황정옥 / 서울 북가좌동 : 하루 이틀 정도는 먹는 데 여러 날 지난 건 조금 그렇죠. 그래서 좀 (유통기한이) 긴 걸 원하는 거죠, 주부들은….]

To alleviate this kind of concern, the ‘consumption date display system’ will be implemented from January 1st.

This is to clearly inform the expiration date that it can be safely consumed and to reduce the waste of edible foods that have passed their expiration date.

If you look at the consumption date reference values provided by the Ministry of Food and Pharmaceutical Safety through their own experiments, tofu increases on average from 17 to 23 days and ham from 38 to 57 days, so you can eat it on 6 and 19 days more, respectively.

However, milk spoils easily if refrigeration is not maintained fully in an open refrigerator, so it’s ruled out until 2031.

The Ministry of Food and Pharmaceutical Safety has decided to allow both markings with an orientation period of one year in view of the company’s readiness and out-of-stock period.

The problem is that many products only display the date on the front and often write “use by date, until a separate display date” in small letters on the back or bottom.

Even if it is a noodle product from the same company, this product has an expiration date, and this product has an expiration date. The only way to know what this date is is to check the back.

Consumers also welcome the implementation of the consumption by date system, but for now they are confused.

[임지원 / 서울 응암동 : (이거 보면 뭐 같으세요?) 유통기한요. (그런데 보면…) 아, 소비기한…아무래도 일일이 확인해야 하니까 좀 불편한 거 같아요.]

It appears that consumers need to pay close attention so that expiration date labeling, which is supposed to reduce food waste and disposal costs, can be established safely.
