The Korea Aerospace Research Institute announced that Korea’s first lunar orbiter “Danuri” (KPLO) has traveled a total of 5.94 million km in space and started entering lunar orbit early this morning.
It has been 135 days since it launched in the United States on August 5 with a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle.
However, the success or failure of the first entry operation will be announced on the 19th by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute after a detailed analysis of the data.
According to the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, Danuri performed the first lunar mission orbit maneuver to enter the lunar mission orbit around 2:45 am today.
Hang Woo-yeon explained that this entry maneuver was a speed reduction process so that Danuri could be stably captured by the moon’s gravity and orbited without passing the moon.
Danuri’s second entry maneuver will take place on the 21st.
