The national courier union held a press conference in the conference room of the Federation of Service Industry Unions in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul on the 15th, saying, “Two and a half months have passed since the announcement of measures for overwork by couriers in October of last year, but the problem of overwork of courier workers is ongoing.” “With the spread of Corona 19 and the year-end and New Year holidays, the delivery volume is exploding, and it is a desperate situation where additional overwork is predicted.”

According to the labor union, on the 7th of last month, a worker at Lotte Courier in Busan Gijang collapsed during delivery and received a stance treatment, and on the 14th of the same month, a worker in his 50s carrying goods from an apartment in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, collapsed in a vehicle and received brain surgery.

In addition, three days before Christmas last year, a Hanjin courier worker in her 40s who suddenly collapsed during the delivery service at Heukseok Market in Dongjak-gu, Seoul, received four brain surgeries. However, it was found that they have not yet found consciousness.

The union said, “Lotte Courier and Hanjin Courier have virtually no personnel for sorting. CJ Logistics is transferring responsibility for hiring and expenses to the agency through the agreement on the acquisition cost of sorting. He criticized the situation as being skipped.”

He pointed out that “late-night delivery is still being carried out at Hanjin Courier, which has announced’stopping late-night delivery’ as a countermeasure.”

The union said, “It is said that the volume of parcel delivery in December of last year increased by 50% compared to the previous year,” and said, “From the 25th (the parcel delivery industry) will enter a special period of explanation. If the social consensus organization does not reach an agreement by the scheduled 19th The union has no choice but to go into a general strike to live,” he stressed.

The union urged that the delivery company should be 100% responsible for the management and expenses of the sorting workforce, and the abnormal delivery charges should be normalized.

The union is scheduled to hold a vote for or against the union members’ industrial action on the 20th-21st.
