[문화]The movie is getting longer… Why is the ‘3 hour’ movie going against the trend?

Movies with a screening time of around 3 hours, such as ‘Titanic’ and ‘Tar’, which were re-released after ‘Avatar: Road to Water’, are holding the top spot at the box office.

In the heyday of short-form films, which favor short films, long films are gaining popularity.

For what reason? This is Reporter Hong Sang-hee.

The screening time of ‘Avatar: Road to Water’, which set a record of 10 million viewers for the first time in Korea this year, is 3 hours and 12 minutes.

‘Babylon’, which attracted attention with La La Land and Whiplash’s director Damien Chazelle and a splendid cast, is 3 hours and 9 minutes long.

‘Titanic’, which was re-released in celebration of its 25th anniversary, recorded a box office success, ranking third in the world box office with a running time of 3 hours and 15 minutes.

Short films and short forms are the trend these days, and the screening time of foreign films that occupy the top ranks at the box office is getting longer and audiences are responding.

At the Academy Awards held next month, ‘Tar’, which was nominated for six categories including Best Picture and Best Actress, ran for 2 hours and 38 minutes,

‘John Wick 4’, which is about to be released in April, is also the longest in the series at 2 hours and 49 minutes.

As sequels to hit films such as the Marvel series and ‘Avatar’ boldly increase their running time, more and more films are recently emphasizing ‘cinematic experience’ and showing long running times.

There is also an analysis that the spread of OTT had an impact on the box office success of rather long films.

For audiences who are accustomed to watching full-length films on OTT, the burden of long screening times has become less, and the psychology that they want to consume differentiated content is also working if they are paying expensive movie tickets.

In the case of domestic films, ‘Hansan Redux’, an extended version of ‘Hansan: The Rise of the Dragon’, was released last year, and director Choi Jong-hoon’s ‘Alien’ was produced as a series and is waiting for the release of the second part.
