[국제]UK-EU Signs a Dramatic Agreement on Future Relations After Brexit

[앵커]

The UK, the European Union and the EU have dramatically concluded negotiations on future relations, including trade agreements.

As a result, the UK faced a complete breakup with the EU four and a half years after the decision of Brexit through a referendum in June 2016.

The UK and the EU announced that they had reached an agreement on future relations negotiations on the 24th local time.

The head of the EU administration, Urzula Ponderaien, said it was a long and winding road, but at the end a good agreement was reached.

In a statement that day, the British government emphasized, “With this agreement, what was promised to the people in the 2016 referendum and last year’s general election has been fulfilled.” I did.

“We have signed a tariff-free, quota-free agreement with the EU for the first time,” the British government explained. “This is the biggest bilateral agreement for each other.”

As of 2019, the volume of bilateral trade amounted to 680 billion pounds and about 13 trillion won in our money.

As the UK and EU conclude negotiations on future relations, the agreement must now go through the parliamentary ratification process of both sides, and the UK government will convene next week to approve the agreement.

As the ruling Conservative Party secured seats far exceeding the majority standard, and the No. 1 opposition party, the Labor Party, is also in a position to avoid’no deal’, it is expected to pass without much difficulty.

In addition, the agreement must be unanimously approved by 27 EU member states and ratified by the European Parliament.

Earlier, the UK withdrew from its member states at the end of January through a Brexit agreement with the EU, and has been negotiating for nine months since March, but until recently, concerns about’no-deal’ have been growing.

If the two sides could not reach an agreement by the end of the year when the transition period was over, the World Trade Organization and WTO system would be applied from next year.

In this case, it was expected that tariffs would be imposed on import and export goods going to and from both sides and a non-tariff barrier would be created, leading to confusion.
