US President Joe Biden has signed an executive order that allows transgender people to serve in the military again.
This is a reversal of former President Donald Trump’s action, which effectively banned transgender service from serving, and restores the policies of former President Barack Obama.
President Biden said in his executive order that “the United States is stronger at home and around the world when it is tolerant. The military is no exception.”
“It’s a better thing for the army and the country to have all eligible Americans wear military uniforms and serve the country,” he said. “In short, this is the right thing to do, and it works for the good.”
The executive order required the Department of Defense and Homeland Security to take action against the military and state defense forces to implement the order, review records of those who were expelled or denied re-entry because of their gender identity, and filed reports within 60 days.
