Television scandal rocks Canary Islands: Censorship and fraud exposed on live TV

“Management orders.” The presenter of the program Connect the Canary Islands, the afternoon magazine of Televisión Canaria, justified in this way live the abrupt interruption that he was ordered by production control to make to the journalist Francisco Pomares, a regular talk show host of the network, at the moment in which he was trying to explain the details of the new derivative of the masks case, known this Tuesday. In it, people such as the president of the Las Palmas Sports Union, Miguel Ángel Ramírez, appear as investigated, but also a former deputy of the Canarian Coalition in the last legislature, Lucas Bravo de Laguna, as well as the former leader of Ciudadanos Christian Zerpa.

“It is the most terrifying case of those that have been raised” because “we find ourselves with 25 million euros in contention,” the journalist tried to explain, referring to information that, as he himself highlighted, had just been published by Cadena Ser. It was Then when he was reprimanded by the presenter to stick to the topic that the program management had proposed, and which could be guessed thanks to the label that appeared at the bottom of the screen: “Should Ángel Víctor Torres be held accountable for the Koldo case?” , which was incompatible with reporting the news that emerged that same Tuesday regarding the new accusations. Pomares tried to explain that he was sticking to the matter under discussion, but the presenter cut him off again with the phrase “management orders.”

Pomares gesticulated ostentatiously demanding an explanation while his face still appeared on the screen, and then stammered some unintelligible phrases of disapproval in voiceover.

The reaction to this live censorship was immediate, both from journalists from Televisión Canaria and from outside the public channel.

Armando Vallejo, a veteran professional of the house, drew attention to the event in his X account: “I’m not going to hide. This is embarrassing for all of us who work at @RTVCCanarias. “It doesn’t represent me and it outrages me.”

Osiris Armas Medina, also a journalist at Televisión Canaria, wrote on the same social network: “This shameful moment does not represent the @RTVCes in which work If someone were tempted, which I highly doubt, that this was the way to act, they would find themselves faced with a staff that knows how to do their job.”

David Cuesta, from Mírame TV, wrote: “This is a shame. A @RTVCes program censors the information on the Prosecutor’s complaint against the president of the UD Las Palmas and three other businessmen”, linking his post in X with the one previously published by the journalist from the Chain Being in the Canary Islands Rafa León, who said the following: “Current Canarian Television, although it seems from another era”, linking to the video in which the moment of the censorship of Pomares is recorded.

Also from Cadena Ser, Luis Quintana wrote: “Censorship on our public television. And without covering up, eh… level. We complain about the health of our journalism when from within we burden it with cronyism. How far we have come and how little respect for the audience.”

The company committees of the public entity Radiotelevisión Canaria issued a statement on Tuesday night in which they condemned the events: “The staff of the Information Services of Televisión Canaria express our total rejection of any type of censorship that is promoted in our chain, as happened this Tuesday, February 27 in the program Connect the Canary Islands and that left one of the fellow participants in it unable to express himself. Likewise, we show our solidarity and total support for Francisco Pomares, whose intervention was censored in said program,” the statement says.

Connect the Canary Islands It is the afternoon magazine that the new Government of Fernando Clavijo imposed on the network as soon as it came to power last summer to replace the veteran Good Afternoon Canary Islands (It’s never too late the last few seasons). This is a space produced by Etiazul, the production company involved in the scandal of rigged hearings in 2022 thanks to the manipulation of audiometers that reflected a greater number of viewers thanks to the variable of guests, as accredited by the control organizations. Two audiometers were removed and the algorithms of the Kantar Media auditor changed for all of Spain to prevent new frauds in the future.

The visible head of that production company is the journalist Pedro Guerra, executive producer of Connect the Canary Islands, and linked in the past with the Unión Deportiva Las Palmas for whom he produced television programs and other audiovisual works. Additionally, he runs the website Canary Islands Weathercondemned to change her previous name (Canary Islands in Time) for a demand Canary Islands Now.

For a few months now, Etiazul has been owned by the Newport company, which covered a capital increase of 200,000 euros that allowed it to retain more than 90% of the capital.

It is not the first serious incident that the program stars in. Connect the Canary Islands since it premiered on the TVC schedule on October 16, 2016. Due to the controversy that arose around the film director Armando Ravelo, accused by several women for alleged sexual abuse, the direction of the program included in the piece that It broadcast an archive video in which the previous sole administrator of the chain, Francisco Moreno, appeared during the presentation of the filmmaker’s latest film. Moreno praised Ravelo’s professional work, which was taken advantage of by Connect the Canary Islands to try to convey that Moreno supported him.

Pedro Guerra, the executive producer of the program, thus passed the bill to the sole administrator under whose mandate the fraud in the hearings was discovered and who decided not to renew the Etiazul programs that were affected on the grid: Confessions y Here the TV.
