Apple Warns Against Using Rice to Fix Wet Cell Phones: Here’s What You Should Do Instead

The myth that if you put a broken cell phone from water in a container of rice, the device will dry out and work normally again is just that: a myth. The thesis behind the idea is popularly justified by the fact that dry, absorbent rice helps to suck moisture from the device, rescuing it, but experts have pointed out for several years that the theory is not credible and Apple has officially warned consumers users of their equipment not to do so. So, if your cell phone has been caught in the rain or fallen into a bathtub or swimming pool, forget about the rice.

“Don’t put your iPhone in a bag of rice. Doing so may allow small particles of rice to damage your iPhone,” the company said, in a technical support note recent report that tells you what to do and what not to do when an iPhone or device gets wet. According to the British newspaper “The Guardian”, in addition to the risk of damage associated with the practice, tests suggested that raw rice is not particularly effective in drying the device.

According to Apple’s guidelines, when users receive a “liquid detected” alert when trying to charge their phones, the first thing to do is disconnect the charging cable at both ends. Then, tap the phone gently against your hand with the connector [orifício onde entra o cabo do carregador] facing down to remove excess liquid” and let it dry for half an hour. At the end of the process, if the phone and cable are “completely dry”, users should try charging the device again. If the attempt fails, you should try again a day later, Apple says.

The user support note also includes two other warnings in the case of wet cell phones: “Do not dry your iPhone using an external source of heat or compressed air. Do not insert foreign objects, such as cotton swabs or paper towels, into the connector.”
