In Polynesia, the educational level even lower than in France – Polynesia the 1st

The results of the national assessments are worrying according to the Minister of Education Gabriel Attal, according to whom a little more than half of the students in fourth grade “do not read properly”. In Polynesia, there are gaps in mathematics and French. Education authorities are considering training for teachers.

It is a valuable tool for teachers, the national assessments carried out at the start of the school year from CP to 4th grade, far from being encouraging this year, are even worrying. For Minister Gabriel Attal, the college is failing to reduce the gaps which are widening dangerously.

In Polynesia, the results are also declining. In CM1, for example, half of the students are below the threshold for success in mathematics and more than half are weak in French.

There are difficulties, particularly in French, in understanding spoken and written language. Concretely, this means that students can read well but understanding the text poses a problem. In mathematics we see that students are able to master simple operations, but problem solving poses difficulties.” presents Eric Tournier, general director of education and teaching in Polynesia.

To better detect these difficulties which increase with the age of children, the education department in Polynesia is targeting training for teachers. As to whether program reform would be possible: “I think it’s not so much the program but the way we implement the program, the time we decide to allocate to certain essential passages of schooling and then the way we work, the way we support a child so that he no longer has to ingest knowledge after knowledge but also manages to process the information” asks Marie Goetz, national education inspector.

Reading fluency, text comprehension or solving math problems: fundamentals to catch up on for the education system which must best support the child to compensate for the gaps and raise the general level.
