Netflix has announced that it has selected Microsoft as its global ad technology and sales partner to launch a “subscription plan with lower cost advertising”.
“Microsoft has proven to be able to support all of our advertising needs as we work together to build a new ad-supported offering,” said Netflix CEO Greg Peters.
“More importantly, Microsoft offered the flexibility to innovate over time in both technology and sales, as well as strong privacy protections for our members,” he added.
The streaming giant has stressed that the service will be in addition to its existing ad-free plans. The company has not yet revealed how much the new service will cost customers.
The BBC recalls that in April of this year, Netflix shares fell after the company reported a decline in subscribers for the first time in more than a decade.
Last month, the company’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos announced that the company is in talks with other companies to find ways to appeal to a price-sensitive audience.
