OSCE meeting in Vienna on crisis diplomacy with Russia

Efforts to ease tensions between Russia and Western states continued on Thursday within the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). The USA and Russia take part in the regular meeting of the OSCE in Vienna as member states. The meeting follows bilateral crisis talks between the two countries in Geneva and a meeting of the 30 NATO countries and Russia in Brussels this week.

While the West is alarmed by the current Russian troop deployment near Ukraine, Moscow wants to prevent NATO from expanding eastwards. According to the US representative to the OSCE, Michael Carpenter, discussions will be held in Vienna about how the diplomatic dialogue can be continued in the coming months. In addition, Poland’s Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau will present his priorities as this year’s OSCE Chairman.

The OSCE is the only regional security forum where the US and Russia regularly sit around the same table. OSCE observers are also monitoring the situation in eastern Ukraine, which is partly controlled by separatists with Moscow’s support.
