President Biden calls for national unity in 9/11 video message

The White House has released a video message from President Biden to commemorate the September 11, 2001 attacks, in which he calls for national unity.

“Unity is what makes us who we are: America at its best,” Biden says. He did add a nuance. “Unity does not mean that we have to believe the same thing. We must have a fundamental respect and trust in each other and in this nation.”

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the hijacked plane attacks. The president reflected on the 2,977 people who died. “America remembers you and your loved ones.”

He says the attacks also brought the best out of Americans. “In the days that followed September 11, 2001, we saw heroism everywhere. In places expected and unexpected,” Biden said in his message. “We also saw something that is all too rare: a real sense of national unity.”
