The Grand Theater presents the programming in the year of its centenary

The Gran Teatro fulfills its 2020 centenary at the service of the entertainment and culture of the people of Elche. It was in that distant year 1920 when it opened its doors with the name “Kursaal”. And although most of its history has been linked to film screenings, since it became municipal property in 1996 after the timely renovation, it has established itself as a badge of the city’s performing and musical arts.
For this reason, the presentation of the catalog of performances of various genres for the period from February to June —more than forty— is loaded with novelties and big names. Programming presented this morning by the head of the Culture Area, Marga Antón, accompanied by the programmer of the Department, Julián Sáez, in a cultural space that, when the season inaugurated last fall concludes in June, with more than 110 functions, will consolidate the ilicitano coliseum as the first public theater in the Valencian Community.

The dance will be represented by the IX April Festival in Dansa, with stagings by the illegal artists OtraDanza —who will present their new show— and Rokuro Kubi. In addition, The Russian Ballet will perform the peak work of Romanticism: ‘Giselle’, being the first time in the Grand Theater that a live orchestra will accompany the choreography. Also, the Centennial Gala of Alicia Alonso, great diva of classical dance, will bring first performers of the most important ballets in the world.

To the programming, for whose design “efforts have been redoubled with the aim of bringing it up to the centennial level,” according to the mayor, the performance of Estrella Morente, that on his new tour he is visiting the most prominent theaters on the international scene, and the celebration, for the first time in Elche, of Jazz Day, on April 30, which will feature saxophonist and flutist Jorge Pardo and North American drummer and vocalist Greg Bandy.

Lastly, Antón has revealed that the celebration of the century of life of the Illegal theater will not be limited to its own facilities, and that it will open to other venues such as La Rotonda del Parque Municipal, which will be visited by Sergio Dalma, Hombres G, India Martínez , Manel, José Mota, Flo or Santiago Segura.

Likewise, the centenary will not only be accompanied by performing and musical arts, there will also be space for exhibitions, guided tours, the presentation of a book and a variety of parallel activities that will revolve around the theater’s ten golden decades.
