NASA. The Perseverance rover will fly to Mars. Broadcast of the start on TVN24 GO

On Thursday, a rocket with the Perseverance rover is to take off from the spaceport at Cape Canaveral towards Mars. NASA scheduled the start at 13.50 Polish time. The broadcast on TVN24 GO will start at 1.30 pm.

Perseverance – from the English “persistence” – is another large Mars rover by the US space agency NASA. It weighs 1043 kg and is three meters long. The construction of this unmanned robotic vehicle took about eight years and cost two and a half billion dollars.

The rover is equipped with many instruments and research systems. There is, among other things, a small autonomous helicopter that can be used for additional research on the Red Planet.

The launch of the Atlas 5 rocket with the rover is scheduled for Thursday at 1:50 PM Polish time from the space flight center at Cape Canaveral in Florida. Perseverance is expected to land on the surface of Mars next February at Jezero Crater and run for at least one Martian year (about 687 Earth days).

The rover will look for traces of life

The main goals of the rover’s mission are to explore the geological diversity at the landing site, search for signs of potential former Martian life, and collect rock samples that could be brought to Earth by a future NASA mission.

“This is the first time we’ve ever gone to Mars on a mission to find life in another world,” said NASA’s Jim Bridenstine.

The rover is set to land in the 250-meter-deep Jezero Crater, which was a lake 3.5 billion years ago. Scientists believe there may be traces of microbial life in the crater.
