Three experiments confirmed that dogs can distinguish between true and false advice from humans.
Scientists from the University of Vienna have found that dogs, depending on the circumstances, are able to identify lies on the part of a person. This is evidenced by the results of a study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Phys.org.-
Experts conducted several experiments in which 260 dogs of various breeds took part.
Two opaque bowls were placed in front of the animals: one of them was empty, and the other contained a treat. One of the volunteers, whom the animals had never seen before, began to tell them where the food was. Choosing the indicated container, the dogs received an award and eventually began to trust him.
Then, in the presence of the dogs, the new stranger transferred food from one bowl to another while the person from the first part of the experiment was observing what was happening, or was absent.
After that, the scientists repeated the steps from the first part of the experiment and came to the conclusion that dogs ignore the advice of a person if he was not present when the treat was shifted.
In addition, about half of the four-legged participants did not follow the person’s advice if he saw the food being moved and then tried to convince the dogs that it was in an empty bowl.
According to the authors of the study, the data obtained confirm that dogs are able to distinguish between human lies.
Previously, similar experiments were carried out with children under the age of five, as well as with macaques and chimpanzees. It turned out that children and monkeys were more likely to trust the advice of an obvious liar than dogs.
