The Boston Red Sox they have designated the right-handed pitcher Joel Payamps for his assignment, according to a club announcement. His spot on the 40-man roster will go to the right-hander. Garrett Richards, whose previously reported one-year contract is now official after he passed his physical. Payamps, 26, was removed from waivers from the Arizona D-backs organization earlier this winter and has not pitched in a game for the Red Sox.
Payamps, who has just seven major league innings under his belt, pitched just three innings in the GK with the D-backs in 2020 and otherwise spent the year at the team’s alternate training site.
In his last minor league action, Payamps struggled in a hitter-friendly environment with Triple-A Reno in the Pacific Coast League, but was solid at Double-A Jackson in both 2018 and 2019.
He has worked as a starter and reliever in the minors, and is left with a minor league option for the upcoming 2021 season, which could generate some interest from another club in waivers. Boston will have a week to trade Payamps, release him, or attempt to pass him through absolute waivers.
