US Presents Ukraine wiht Peace Plan Involving Territorial Concessions and Arms Reduction
The United States has presented Ukraine with a draft plan to end the war, according to two sources cited by Reuters. The proposal includes demands that are reportedly difficult for Ukraine to accept: the cession of territories currently under Russian control and a reduction in the size of its Armed Forces.
The White House has reportedly communicated to Kiev that acceptance of the plan’s main points, including the military downsizing, is expected - a demand mirroring a key position held by Moscow. Accepting such a plan would represent a defeat for Ukraine and President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has consistently stated his goal of reclaiming all Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014.
The proposal comes at a challenging time for Ukraine.Russian forces are making territorial gains, and Kiev is grappling with a corruption scandal that has already resulted in the dismissal of the ministers of Energy and Justice. A Ukrainian official confirmed to Reuters that “signals” regarding the US proposals have been received, acknowledging their origin in discussions between the United States and Russia.
the extent of the territorial concessions suggested by the US remains unclear. Russia currently controls nearly all of the Donbass region (with a portion of the Donetsk region still contested) and maintains a presence in the Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
On Thursday, President Zelensky is scheduled to meet with representatives of the US Armed forces in Kiev, signaling Ukraine’s interest in halting Russia’s advance or reaching a resolution before further territorial losses occur.
The United Kingdom has stated it shares the goal of ending the war, echoing a sentiment expressed by former US President Donald Trump, and called on Russia to withdraw its forces, stating that Russia “could do this tomorrow by withdrawing its forces and ending its illegal invasion,” according to a UK Foreign Office spokesperson.
