UN Imposes New Sanctions on Iran Over Nuclear Program, Sparking Tehran’s Outcry
New York - The United Nations Security Council has approved stringent economic sanctions against Iran in response to its revived nuclear program, a move swiftly condemned by Tehran. The decision follows mounting pressure from European nations concerned over Iran’s compliance with the 2015 Joint Extensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
According to reports from AFP on Saturday, September 20, 2025, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany – key signatories of the JCPOA – allege that Iran has repeatedly violated the terms of the agreement, originally designed to prevent the progress of nuclear weapons.
“We urge (Iran) to act now,” stated British Ambassador Barbara Woodward, emphasizing the need for immediate action while also leaving the door open for diplomatic solutions during next week’s UN General Assembly in New York.
However, Iran vehemently rejected the sanctions as “coercive politics.” Iranian Ambassador to the UN,Amir Saeid Iravani, denounced the vote as “hasty, unneeded, and unlawful,” asserting that Iran does not recognize any obligation to comply.
The escalating tensions come despite recent attempts at negotiation. Iranian Foreign minister Abbas Araghchi had previously presented what he described as a “just and balanced” proposal to European powers aimed at averting the re-imposition of sanctions.
French President Emmanuel Macron indicated earlier this month that he anticipated the reinstatement of international sanctions by the end of September. While France’s UN Ambassador suggested a negotiated settlement remained possible, the Western trio maintained that progress in talks had stalled.
