kyiv Under Siege in Largest Russian Air Attack of the War; Infant Among the Dead
Kyiv, Ukraine - Russia launched its largest air attack on kyiv as the start of the war Friday, utilizing drones and missiles in a sustained assault that lasted over 11 hours. The attack resulted in at least two deaths – an infant and a young woman in the Darnytskyi district - and left more than 20 people wounded in the capital, according to Ukrainian officials. The escalating attacks underscore a brutal phase of the conflict as Ukraine continues to strike targets within Russia, aiming to disrupt Moscow’s war effort by targeting its energy infrastructure. The strikes on Kyiv, and Ukraine’s reciprocal actions, highlight the increasingly direct confrontation between the two nations and the urgent need for continued international support for Ukraine’s defense. A meeting of kyiv’s allies is scheduled for next week to discuss air defense and supplies for Ukraine’s deep strikes on Russia.
An infant’s body was recovered from the rubble of a damaged four-story apartment building in the Darnytskyi district, officials said. A young woman was also killed in the same attack, which occurred in the district east of the Dnipro River.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, surveying damage at a government building struck by drones and missiles, called for increased weapons deliveries to Ukraine. “We will rebuild the buildings,” Svyrydenko said. “But lost lives cannot be brought back. The enemy terrorizes and kills our people across the country every day.”
Ukraine’s defense ministry announced a new meeting with its allies next week, with discussions focused on bolstering air defenses and providing supplies for Kyiv’s ongoing deep strikes into Russian territory.
As part of this strategy, Ukraine’s military reported attacking the Druzhba oil pipeline in Russia’s Bryansk region overnight, inflicting “complete fire damage.” Targeting Russia’s energy complex is intended to weaken the financial foundation supporting the war.
