China weighs strategic impact, trade ties as US mulls military response in Iran

China Watches as Israel-Iran Conflict Escalates

China is cautiously observing the rising tensions between Israel and Iran, even as the United States considers military involvement. This situation presents complex challenges for Beijing, balancing its relationships and global interests amidst the ongoing conflict.

China’s Cautious Stance

Observers believe that China will probably stay measured in its actions regarding the intensifying Israel-Iran dispute, particularly if the US gets involved militarily. Last week, Israel conducted its most intense strikes against Iran in decades, fueling speculation of possible American intervention.

The US has sent an aircraft carrier from the South China Sea and deployed fighter and tanker aircraft to the Middle East, adding to the volatility. Moreover, reports indicate that US President Donald Trump is considering military action aimed at Iran’s nuclear facilities. He also demanded the “unconditional surrender” of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Beijing’s Response

On Wednesday, China’s foreign ministry voiced “serious concerns” regarding the escalating conflict. They urged countries that have “special influence” over Israel, implicitly the US, to play a “constructive role” to ease tensions.

“Further escalation of tensions in the Middle East is not in the interests of any party. Countries that have a special influence on Israel should, in particular, uphold an objective and fair position and assume their due responsibilities, and play a positive and constructive role in easing the situation and preventing spillover of the conflict.”

Guo Jiakun, Ministry Spokesman

China, which has close relations with Tehran, has also expressed a willingness to mediate peace between Iran and Israel. The number of casualties in the Middle East has increased by 15% in the last quarter, according to recent reports (World Conflict Monitor 2024).

China’s Diplomatic Efforts

Beijing opposes any actions that violate the principles of the UN Charter, or that infringe on the sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity of other nations, according to ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun. The country’s stance underscores its commitment to maintaining international stability.
