LAS VEGAS – Two skydivers sustained serious injuries after a parachute malfunction during a jump south of Las Vegas on September 17, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
the incident occurred near Jean, Nevada, when two sets of jumpers exited a small plane at an altitude of 11,000 feet. One pair experienced issues with both their primary and reserve parachutes.
Investigators reported to police that the primary parachute “was not working and also it could have,” and the backup parachute’s deployment was hampered by a slide that failed to fully extend. Consequently, the skydivers impacted the ground at speeds between 35 and 45 mph.
Both individuals were transported to UMC Trauma by Mercy Air with notable injuries.
the Federal Aviation Administration is currently investigating the incident. Skydiving carries inherent risks, and proper parachute function is critical for a safe landing. Standard skydiving procedures include rigorous equipment checks and dual-parachute systems as a safety measure.
