Samsung Display Commences Mass Production of OLEDOS Panels,Targeting XR Market Growth
Samsung Display has begun mass production of OLEDOS (OLED on Silicon) displays, marking its entry into a market currently led by Japanese and Chinese companies. The move comes as demand for XR (extended reality) devices from companies like Meta,Apple, and Samsung Electronics increases. This is the first mass production of oledos by Samsung Display, with initial deliveries underway.
Currently, Sony supplies 4K OLEDOS to Apple’s Vision Pro, while China’s Siya provides FHD OLEDOS for DJI Goggles 2. Siya and BOE subsidiary BMOT are projected to supply Oledos to Meta’s ‘quest’ series starting in 2026.
The XR panel market is projected to reach $600 million (approximately 820 billion won) in 2024, according to Omdia. While small compared to the broader OLED market, increased competition is expected to drive down oledos prices. Omdia senior researcher Kimi Lin forecasts 0.49-inch OLEDoS prices will fall from $25 this year to $20 in 2025 and $17 in 2026.
Samsung Display is pursuing supply agreements with both Samsung Electronics and Apple. The company is also accelerating development of next-generation RGB OLEDoS technology, having acquired US-based RGB OLEDoS company ‘Imagine’ in 2023 and establishing a dedicated development organization.Prototypes with a resolution of 5000PPI and brightness levels of 20,000 nits have already been demonstrated.
When asked about supplying panels for Samsung’s Galaxy XR device, Samsung Display stated, “We cannot confirm issues related to our customers.”
