TikTok to Invest Over $37.7 Billion in New Brazilian Data Center

Pecém, Ceará – tiktok announced Wednesday a important investment exceeding US$37.69 billion in the construction of a new data center located in the industrial and port complex of Pecém, in the northeastern brazilian state of Ceará.The announcement was made by Monica Guise, TikTok’s head of Public Policies for Brazil, during an event attended by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Investment Details and Timeline
The investment, according to a company statement, includes an estimated US$20.34 billion earmarked for the import of high-tech equipment between now and 2035. TikTok anticipates the data center will be fully operational by 2027.
Partnerships and Renewable Energy Commitment
TikTok is partnering with Omnia, a data center firm owned by investment company Patria, and Casa dos Ventos, a renewable energy operator, for this project. Notably, the data center will be powered entirely by renewable energy generated from newly constructed wind farms, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable operations.
Previous Reporting and Evolving Estimates
Initial reports from Reuters in April indicated that ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, was exploring a substantial investment in a Brazilian data center.Confirmation of the plans came in October from Mines and Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira, though initial investment estimates at that time were around US$9.41 billion.The current announced figure represents a significant increase.
This investment underscores TikTok’s commitment to expanding its infrastructure and data security capabilities in Latin America.
