Robert Lewandowski has reversed his decision to retire from international duty with Poland, following the appointment of new head coach Jan Urban.
The Barcelona star had previously announced his departure from the national team due to a fallout with former coach Michał Probierz. However, Goal.pl reports that Lewandowski is now committed to supporting Urban’s vision for the team, regardless of whether he retains the captaincy.
The conflict that led to Lewandowski’s initial withdrawal stemmed from Probierz stripping him of the captain’s armband and awarding it to Piotr Zieliński. This decision, coupled with a World Cup qualifying defeat to Finland, ignited a firestorm in the Polish press. Lewandowski publicly stated he had “lost confidence in the coach’s decisions” and would not play for Poland again until the coaching staff was changed.
Michał Probierz, who took charge in September 2023, guided Poland to qualification for the European Championship. However, the team’s performance in the tournament was disappointing, failing to secure a victory and exiting at the group stage.
