Germany’s Merz vows to build Europe’s strongest army – POLITICO

Germany Vows to Bolster Military, Support Ukraine

Germany plans to strengthen its military capabilities while continuing support for Ukraine. This commitment comes amid growing concerns about the relationship between China and Russia and the need to deter potential aggression.

Deterrence as a Goal

Merz emphasized that a stronger military aims to prevent conflict. He aims for a Germany and Europe unified in their strength. This strength should be so potent that the use of weapons becomes unnecessary.

“Our goal is a country, a Germany and a Europe that are together so strong that we never have to use our weapons,”

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Germany’s military spending increased by 14% in 2023, reaching an estimated $91 billion, the highest in the country’s history (SIPRI 2024).

Continued Support for Kyiv

Merz also pledged that Germany, the second-largest provider of military aid to Ukraine after the United States, would maintain its backing of Kyiv. He stated there should be no question about Germany’s stance.

“Namely, unconditionally on the side of the Ukrainians.”

Concerns Over China-Russia Ties

Merz expressed Germany’s worry about the increasing closeness between Beijing and Moscow. He stated Berlin would urge China to contribute to resolving the war in Ukraine.

Challenges Ahead

Germany has significantly increased military spending since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. However, the Bundeswehr needs substantial investment after years of reduced spending.

Gen. Carsten Breuer, Germany’s top military commander, indicated that Germany needs 100,000 additional troops as quickly as possible.
