US Absence at Belém Climate Conference
US President Donald Trump will not personally attend the United Nations climate conference, scheduled to take place in Belém, Brazil, from November 10th to 21st. This decision comes as the United States, the world’s second-largest greenhouse gas emitter, has once again withdrawn from the Paris Climate Agreement.
During his first term (2017-2021), President Trump initially cancelled the landmark agreement, designed to limit global temperature increases to under two degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels. His governance has consistently prioritized increased domestic oil and gas production.
Despite the President’s absence, a significant delegation from the US is expected to participate. Over one hundred representatives from US states and cities, including governors and mayors, will attend the conference. Gina McCarthy, co-chair of the “America is All In” alliance, stated on Thursday, “We are making a strong appearance.”
Trump Denies Venezuela Military Action
In a separate advancement, President Trump has firmly denied reports of planned military attacks against Venezuela. Responding to a journalist’s inquiry aboard Air Force One on Friday, he offered a concise ”no.”
The denial follows a substantial US military operation in the Caribbean,which the Trump administration claims is focused on combating drug smuggling. Though, the Venezuelan government has expressed concerns that the operation could be a prelude to a US invasion.
