Chinese Actress Wang Ziwen Navigates Single Motherhood, Industry Challenges
BEIJING – Chinese actress Wang Ziwen, known for her roles in dramas like “Ode to Joy” and the sci-fi hit “Three-Body,” is increasingly recognized not only for her performances but also for openly embracing single motherhood – a growing, though still sensitive, trend among mainland Chinese women. The 37-year-old actress revealed in 2021 she had welcomed a son via artificial insemination, sparking widespread discussion about societal expectations and reproductive choices.

Born in 1987 in Sichuan province, southwestern china, Wang comes from a family of educators – her father and grandfather were both university professors. Her entry into the entertainment world began at age 13 when she was selected by a Chinese entertainment company to train as an idol in South Korea. Though she didn’t debut as part of a group, her experience helped pave the way for future Chinese artists entering the K-pop scene, including Victoria Song and Meng Jia.
