Britain to Recognize Palestinian State in September, PM Starmer Announces

jakarta – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has declared that the United Kingdom will officially recognize the state of Palestine in September, contingent on Israel’s approval of a ceasefire in Gaza. The proclamation, made after recalling his cabinet from recess to discuss the escalating crisis in the Gaza region, signals a perhaps significant shift in British foreign policy.

In a televised address from Downing Street, Starmer stated that Britain’s recognition woudl occur if Israel does not take the steps demanded during the United Nations General Assembly in September. He emphasized the need for an end to the dire situation in Gaza, the approval of a ceasefire, and a commitment to a lasting and sustainable peace, thereby revitalizing the prospects for a two-state solution.

“I have always said that we will recognize the Palestinian state as a contribution to the right peace process, at the time of maximum impact on the solution of two countries,” Starmer articulated. “With a solution that is now threatened, this is the time to act.”

The Prime Minister also outlined specific demands for the Palestinian militant group Hamas, including the immediate release of all hostages, the signing of a ceasefire, the disarmament of weapons, and an acceptance that they will not hold a role in the Gaza government.

This advancement follows a similar announcement from French President Emmanuel Macron, who stated that France would also recognize the Palestinian state during the UN General Assembly. Macron’s decision, made on July 24th, has already garnered reactions from the United States and Saudi Arabia. Macron conveyed his decision via social media, writing, “In accordance with his ancient commitment for fair and eternal peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the Palestinian state. I will make an official announcement at the UN General Assembly in September.”
