The Body Shop Opens New Christchurch Store Following NZ Revival
The Body Shop has returned to Christchurch with a new store at Riccarton, marking another step in a nationwide expansion following the collapse of the brand’s previous New Zealand operator, the NZ Herald reported. Revival at Riccarton follows the previous local business entering voluntary administration in January 2025 after financial difficulties at its British parent company. Creditors subsequently voted to place the local operation into liquidation with reported liabilities of about $12m.
New Stores Open in Richmond and Christchurch
Following the collapse, new owners launched a new online operation last October, followed by their first physical store at Richmond Mall, near Nelson, in November 2025. Wyman said the Richmond store had been trading well, but the move into Christchurch was a major expansion, noting that getting into a property like Riccarton is great for visibility and trade.
The new Christchurch store opened ahead of the busy Christmas trading period and is expected to employ between 10 and 14 people, including casual staff. Recruitment for the location attracted strong interest, described as an avalanche of respondents. The shop’s fit-out featured a large mural by a local artist.

Looking ahead, the company is eyeing further expansion, with Auckland as a likely next destination alongside other regional centres. Wyman stated they plan to grow by one or two stores a year over the next three or four years and then assess their standing. Despite the growth of online shopping, Wyman believes physical stores remain essential for beauty retailers because customers want to experience products before buying them.
Loyal Customers Help Revive Damaged Brand Reputation
Reflecting on the brand, Wyman acknowledged that the previous collapse had damaged the reputation, but noted that a loyal customer base provided confidence to invest in the revival. Founded in Britain by Dame Anita Roddick in 1976, The Body Shop celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
Wyman noted that one of the biggest challenges has been making customers aware that the retailer has returned, stating that while everyone knows they closed, it is harder to get them to know they are open. Nonetheless, enthusiastic customers have reacted strongly, with people running across malls expressing disbelief at the return.
