Sunland Park ⁢Racetrack & Casino sold too Pennsylvania-Based Penn National Gaming

SUNLAND PARK, ​N.M. ‌- Sunland Park ‌Racetrack ‌& Casino has been sold to Penn National Gaming, Inc., a Pennsylvania-based gaming and racing company, marking a notable shift for the ‌El Paso-area racetrack. The sale, finalized recently, aims to revitalize the track and potentially increase ⁣investment in racing and casino operations.

The acquisition comes as Sunland ‌Park prepares to begin its⁢ live racing ‌meet⁤ in early January,​ a 55-day season concluding in early April 2026. the change in ownership is viewed with optimism ‌by trainers and industry stakeholders,who hope Penn‍ National’s involvement will bring renewed focus and resources to the racetrack,a⁣ key regional hub for thoroughbred and quarter horse racing.

“Sunland Park is ⁤a grate track, it’s home for our team and I love being there,” said quarter horse trainer‌ Eric Valenzuela, who has run horses at Sunland Park for six years.”I hope it ​continues to be a great place to be.”

The racetrack is known for hosting the annual ⁤Sunland Park Derby, a prominent stakes race for 3-year-old thoroughbreds. The Derby offers points‍ toward eligibility for the Kentucky Derby, drawing regional and national attention.

Horse trainer‍ Todd Fincher ‍expressed hope that the new ownership will spur improvements. “Sunland Park is a great place for racing and we’re always hoping for betterment in the racing ‍aspect. With a new owner, we hope there ‌is more interest in the racing,” Fincher said.

Penn National⁣ Gaming owns, operates, or manages racing facilities and ​casinos across the United States. Details ⁢regarding specific investment plans⁢ for Sunland Park have⁣ not yet been released.
